Name of the panda cub to be announced this week!
News Giant Pandas Birth news
During a small private gathering, the name with the most votes will be revealed and the panda cub will go by that name from then on. In China, the tradition is to name the cub after 100 days. That day is 14 August 2020.
What will it be?
Voters worldwide had three weeks to cast their vote for five Chinese names: He Kang, He Shun, Fan Xing, Dan Qing and Xing He. These five Chinese names were compiled in consultation with the Chinese Embassy and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The names are gender neutral as the sex of the panda cub is not yet known.
In the maternity den for now
Wu Wen and her cub will remain in the maternity den for the time-being. The keepers closely monitor the development of the cub using video footage. The cub has to grow, learn how to walk and follow its mother, Wu Wen, before they can go and explore the rest of the enclosure together. We expect visitors of Ouwehands Zoo to get their first glimpses of the cub in October 2020.
